A Few Words About Blogging Etiquette

Friday, August 13, 2010
I'm interrupting the normal retro theme of my posts to air a minor gripe about blogging etiquette. It's about reposting images from other blogs, including this one.

Technically, unless I took a photo myself, I don't own the copyrights to any vintage image that I post here - whether it's an advertisment, scan, stock photo, or otherwise. However, if I do see an image on another blog that I follow that I absolutely have to have to accompany my own original commentary, I do two things: 1. I ask the blogger for permission to repost it on Go Retro and 2. when I post it here, I give credit to the blog that "lent" it to me, and I include a link back to their site. To me that's just being nice and practicing good blogger etiquette, and I'm giving their blog an extra shout out on mine, as I would want them to do for me.

I'm bringing this up because in recent months I've seen ads that I've posted on Go Retro get reposted on blogs whose owners follow me and/or list me in their blog roll. Not everyone, of course....but I've discovered it a few times. Yeah, maybe it was just a coincidence, but I don't think so...it's pretty obvious if you follow me and comment on something and then repost it on your own blog a couple of days later, that you grabbed it from here. I can't twist anyone's arm and make them do something, but it would be nice if you just mentioned you got it from here and link back to this site. Do onto other bloggers as you'd like them to do onto you!

Thanks. Sorry for the public service announcement, but I had to get that off my chest. Retro posting to resume ASAP...

  2. Oh lordy, I hope I did not do anything like that (if so it was inadvertant, I don't believe I've used any of your ads/images)- and I totally agree with you!

  3. Totally agree with you, Pam. I haven't had that issue - (that I know of).

  4. I completely agree with you. There are definite things that we do to foster the community such as sharing photos and such AND then linking to the original post you got your image, theme ideas, whatevers from. I see you do it all the time and I think that really makes this place feel so much more communal.

I had an issue with someone who was basically stealing not images but ideas from me and so I'm a bit sensitive to it and glad to see there are others who are too!

  6. I would be upset if this happened to me too. I have used a few pictures from google images and ebay. Should I have asked for permission? I try not to do this but sometimes I like having a photo of toys or something that I used to have. I don't think any of them have been from blogs though. If they were I'd definitely want to ask permission. I don't know how to post links though.

  7. @Barbara - there were a couple of ads from the 70s Sexy Advertising Studs posts that I did that went up on your blog, and I never saw my blog's name mentioned or linked. Maybe I just overlooked it someplace.

There is another blog that did the same a few times, but it is someone who has never commented on here.

@LaraAnn - Google and ebay is tricky...there are so many images out there. I would say you don't have to credit them. I try to just include a caption underneath giving credit to the photographer if it's a media photo, or if I found the image on Flickr.

Anyways, no big whoop...if you can take the extra time to just say you found it here I appreciate it!

  8. Forgive me if I did this. I don't always give credit, espacially because sometimes I keep my favourite on my computer and often don't remember where I got them from!
But if I remember, I do give credit, and I add the blogs to my linklist.
And I totally agree that people shouldn't use pictures without giving credit!

  9. I have to agree with Tom - sometimes I save a picture and don't remember where I got it. The only one I didn't credit you for was back in May! Otherwise, I have credited you and linked your site.

This makes me so leery of posting any pictures - someone is always going to be offended.
