Two Forgotten Friday Favorites: The Weather Girls

Friday, August 26, 2011
I think The Weather Girls would be awfully excited about this weekend's East Coast hurricane--it could start raining men. I don't care if the song became adopted as a gay man's anthem; the video is one of my favorite cheesy 80s videos. This hefty, man-hungry duo was made up of Martha Wash and Izora Armstead. Their original stage name was Two Tons O' Fun, and their self-evident sass and self-acceptance was sort of groundbreaking for women in entertainment during their time. Plus these ladies could really sing. After the success of "It's Raining Men", they enjoyed a few other minor hits such as "Dear Santa (Bring Me a Man This Christmas)" and "Well-A-Wiggy." Armstead passed away at the age of 62 in 2004, but her daughters are carrying on The Weather Girls legacy in Germany.

So, for my fellow East Coast readers, stay safe this weekend and for my fellow single ladies, I hope you see a hottie or two float past your window on Sunday.

  1. What are her daughters doing here in Germany? I'll have to investigate!

  2. @Keir, apparently Armstead split with Wash in the late 80s or so and moved to Germany.

  3. Hi, Pam-
I've always loved their song It's Raining Men and bought one of those music compilation CDs esp. because this song is on it. I'm not familiar with their other songs though. I will have to listen to it later because my brother will be waking up soon and I don't want him catching me on the computer at 6 a.m.

I hope that Hurricane Irene doesn't cause us that much damage. The news has got me pretty scared about it. The weather is supposed to be nice on Monday but I'm worried about the after affects and how my brother and I might not even be able to go to the US Open because the trains and subways might be affected.

I read the one book by Louise Hay that you recommended and am on Real Magic now. Both are good and are really giving me some tips on how to think more positively. I appreciate your suggesting these to me - you are such a good friend.

I hope that you have a good weekend despite the gloomy and frightening weather that's on the way. I won't have any time within the next week to do any computer stuff because of being at the tennis event but I'm looking forward to getting back to it afterwards. I haven't even been to FB, Twitter and FB latley - too many other chores and projects to take care of before next week.

I watched a couple episodes of American Pickers lately and have come to enjoy your show. I even taped a couple of episodes because I get so sleepy by 8 pm because of being up at 4 a.m. so I'll be watching those this weekend along with the Closer.

    Take care. Lara

  4. Oh my goodness, Pam, thank you so much for sharing this! This is hilarious. It never occurred to me that I didn't know what they looked like but knowing this (and knowing they used to be Two Tons O Fun makes it better).

  6. Ah great, timely post Pam. I like this song too. Hope you are doing well and are safe at your neck of the woods! Many of my blog friends live in the path of the hurricane! Let us know how you are, if you can. :)

  7. Ha! I must have overlooked this but so funny: "I hope you see a hottie or two float past your window on Sunday."

    Wouldn't that be fantastic? :P

  8. Thanks, Chelly. It turned out to not be bad at all in my area. Just high gusts of wind, and lots of small branches and leaves down, but thankfully no trees. Unfortunately, no hotties blew my way...hahaha.

  10. Temperatures rising.. Outta control!! My bride and kids bust a gut when I sing along to it's raining men. Wonder why? I remember Two Tons of fun!! In fact.. they play a lot of there stuff on the "Studio 54" music channel on SIRIUS XM Satellite radio. I really dig that channel. Nice post, I'll have to look up the younger Weather Duo!

P.S... I just responded on my blog to your comment on "The Universal Code of Unwritten Rules'. Ciao!

  11. It's fun song! I only in more recent years figured out Martha Wash was 1/2 of the group as her name always rings a bell to me about the whole C+C Music Factory debacle in the early 90's. It's such a shame someone's weight makes them "undesirable". She's a gorgeous lady.

  12. The Daughter of the Izora Armstead is living in Germany Dynelle Rhodes. She teamed with a young lady, after her mom died, name Ingrid Arthur..they are both great singers in their own right, but from what I hear...work got slow and Ingrid had to keep work coming in...and so she does work with Dynelle from time to time. But other people are used....GOTTA KEEP MOVING NO MATTER WHAT. I had the pleasure of meeting Izora Armstead...one cool woman! But I do love their song... I aslo think Dynelle and Ingrid did some album..more than one I think. Have to look that up and get back to you.
